Our approach to knowledge transfer is based on two elements:

INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATION

The first element of our knowledge transfer plan is industrial collaboration and partnership with existing companies, taking advantage of the large number of biotechnology and synthetic biology companies located in the Bay Area. These collaborations will provide a foot in the door to the world of industrial cell technology for the Center, as well as providing opportunities for our students to learn more about the biotechnology industry.

IP DEVELOPMENT

The second element of our knowledge transfer strategy is developing new IP and companies. Our ultimate goal is to help seed new startup companies based around center ideas. We are establishing our procedures for soliciting proposals, selecting startups, and supporting them to perform key proof of concept experiments that will then allow them to gain independent external funding, either through venture capital or SBIR grants.
